Road Barricades
HERMEQ road barricades direct traffic, close lanes and keep pedestrians clear of road work zones, utility excavations and construction sites. The range runs from lightweight plastic panel barricades and utility barriers to self-weighted lane separators, water filled barriers and crash-tested units for work beside live traffic.
Panel barricades come in orange, blue, green, yellow and white, and the separators and water filled barriers in red, white or a red and white mix. Most are molded from UV-stabilized polyethylene, which holds its color through long outdoor deployments and stands up to repeated handling from job to job.
Types of road barricades
Every type in the range does one of three jobs: it warns drivers and walkers of a hazard, it separates traffic from a work area or a walking route, or it protects a crew from a vehicle that leaves its lane.
Plastic panel barricades
Molded plastic panel barricades are the standard choice for marking a lane closure, fencing off a work area or rerouting foot traffic. The plastic road barricades hook together into continuous lines of any length. Where the run has to turn or open for access, barricades with hinged wing panels form corners, U-shaped enclosures and gates. For long road projects where the line stays in place for weeks, the footplate traffic barricade locks onto heavy footplates.
Utility barriers and manhole guards
Three- and four-sided utility barriers enclose a manhole, a cable pit or a small excavation on every side, and their hinged joints let one set travel from opening to opening. For a longer opening in a sidewalk or street, the plank barrier system builds a run from separate bases, posts and planks that assemble without tools.
Self-weighted barriers
Self-weighted barriers carry their weight in the molding, so they go into position ready for use with no water, sand or ballast to deliver. The Wonder Wall self-weighted barrier is the taller option for highway edges and pedestrian interfaces and takes signs and extension panels. The low-profile self-weighted barriers and the wheeled Road Runner form low lane separators along a work zone, and Oaklog lane separators are heavier interlocking logs for dividing vehicle routes on construction sites and highways.
Water filled barriers
Water filled barriers ship and move empty, then fill on site from a hose, which builds a heavy, continuous line without a crane or a delivery of concrete. The lighter water filled barriers and separators divide walkers from traffic and open excavations. The long water filled jersey barriers form perimeter and lane lines on highways, demolition jobs and large civil projects.
Crash-tested barriers
Two barriers in the range are crash-tested for work zones where a vehicle could reach the crew. The crash-tested water filled barrier fills on site like the rest of the water filled range, and the steel crash-tested road barrier is a modular steel unit built for rapid deployment on urban streets and highways.
Crowd control barricades
Interlocking plastic and galvanized steel crowd control barricades line queues, event perimeters and site walkways, and the full choice of designs sits in crowd control barriers.
Track barriers
Low, fillable track barriers interlock into curves and S-shapes along race circuits and motor sport tracks, and they fill with water or sand once placed. They are an alternative to tire walls and timber fencing.
Self-righting traffic cylinders
Self-righting traffic cylinders fix to asphalt or concrete and spring back upright after a vehicle strikes them, so they hold a lane line in parking lots, at temporary crossings and around work zone bends.

Traffic barricades or crash-tested barriers
Panel barricades, utility barriers, self-weighted separators and the lighter water filled barriers are warning and channeling devices: they show drivers and pedestrians where the hazard is and which way to go, and the plastic panel barricade listing states that it is not for vehicle impact or crash containment. They are right for lane closures, sidewalk detours, excavation guarding and events, where traffic is slow or the barrier only has to be seen and followed.
Where a vehicle could strike the line at speed and carry on into a crew or an open excavation, the run needs a barrier tested for impact. The RB22 water filled barrier and the Bull Barrier steel barrier are both crash-tested at 50 mph, and for permanent or long-term positions concrete barriers and highway guardrail do the same job. Weight on its own does not decide the question: filled weights across the water filled range run from 61 lb to 1,323 lb, and only the heaviest of them, the RB22, carries a crash test.
Traffic control barriers for road work and events
Road work and lane closures
A lane closure has to read clearly to drivers from a distance and hold its alignment while traffic passes at close range. Barriers that join into an unbroken run, with angled joints at the taper and at bends, leave no gaps for a vehicle to drift into, and the run is set out to the traffic control plan before the first unit goes down. Where crews need a way through a crash-tested line, the walkthrough pedestrian gate connects to the RB22 run without breaking it. Traffic cones carry the advance taper, with cone lights for night closures.
Utility and excavation work
Utility jobs move often, so the barriers have to fit in a work truck, go up quickly and enclose an opening completely, with no open side facing a sidewalk. Around a trench, water filled separators with a concave base hold back spoil as well as marking the edge. Where the walking route has to cross the excavation, curb ramps and trench covers keep the sidewalk open while the barriers guard the rest of the opening.
Sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours
A pedestrian detour has to give walkers, wheelchair users and people pushing strollers a continuous, clearly bounded route with no gaps where they could step into traffic or the work area. The Avalon safety barricade is built for city sidewalk closures and school walkways, and more pedestrian and lane devices sit in the wider traffic barricades range.
Events and public spaces
At events, retail frontages and civic sites the barricades stand in front of the public for days at a time, so a tidy, uniform line matters as much as the boundary itself. Custom branded barricades take a nameplate that is swapped between events or projects. Entry points and emergency exits belong in the layout before delivery, since a closed perimeter has to open quickly.

Setting up plastic traffic barricades on site
Stability and wind
A run can be held down without sandbags in three ways: self-weighted barriers need nothing added, water filled barriers take their weight on site, and panel barricades take purpose-made ballast. For panel lines, barricade stabilizers hook onto the line and double as a base for a twist-lock cylinder, and plastic-coated ballast blocks sit at the foot of barriers and gates, both at 33 lb each. Open roadsides, bridges and exposed lots call for a heavier or ballasted setup, and the Olympic and custom branded barricades publish wind classes that match the ballast used to the wind speed expected.
Height and fence extensions
Mesh fence extensions drop into water filled barriers to add an anti-climb steel panel above the base, and water filled fence bases hold standard construction fence panels upright with a small footprint on inner city sites.
Feet and trip hazards
Anti-trip feet are the choice for any barricade on a public route, because they are narrower and keep less of the base in the walking line. Panel barricades and the plank barrier system come with standard or anti-trip feet, and the low water filled separators have an anti-trip profile of their own. Standard feet are wider and suit road edges and crew-only areas. Replacement barricade feet in both styles fit the plastic barricades in the range, so a cracked foot is swapped without retiring the barricade.
Color and night visibility
Orange panels and red and white separators are the colors drivers read as road work. Blue, green, yellow and white panel barricades are made for retail, park, school and civic work, where orange looks harsh against the surroundings. Reflective strips come on the panel barricades, the utility barriers and many water filled units, and barricade lights add a lit warning on night closures.
Handling and storage
Panel barricades and utility barriers are light enough for one person and stack flat for transport. The heavier water filled barriers have forklift channels for mechanical lifting and drain through a base plug at the end of the job. In the yard, barricade storage racks hold up to 40 plastic barricades upright, stack two high and lift by forklift.

Frequently Asked Questions
Road barricades are also called traffic barricades, traffic barriers, construction barricades, safety barricades and traffic control barricades, and the names are used interchangeably for portable devices that close or channel a road or walkway. Water filled units shaped like highway barriers are known as water filled jersey barriers. Low units that divide lanes are called lane separators, and flexible posts are called delineators or traffic cylinders.
Yes. Battery-powered barricade lights clip onto panel barricades without tools, switch on at dusk with a photocell and run in flashing or steady mode. The Wonder Wall barrier and the footplate traffic barricade have lamp mounts built in, and the posts of the plank barrier system carry lamps and signs.
The Wonder Wall barrier and the plastic utility barrier cite MUTCD work zone guidance in their listings, the self-righting traffic cylinder lists MUTCD compliance and NCHRP 350 crashworthiness, and the Avalon barricade is listed as an MUTCD barrier. The traffic control plan or agency specification for the job sets which devices a work zone requires.
Yes. Plastic panel and crowd control barricades can be embossed with a company name and ordered with colored feet for zoning, and the steel fixed-leg crowd control barricades are powder coated in custom colors. Corporate colors are available on the water filled fence bases subject to a minimum order, and the nameplate barricades have a minimum order of 40.
Barriers link within their own connection system. The Wonder Wall barrier and the water filled separators share one clip system, so they join into a single run with angled joints. Panel barricades join by hook and eye, and the RB22 barrier uses steel pins with its own angle sections, gates and fence extensions.
Yes. The plastic utility barriers close off maintenance areas and floor openings indoors, and the fillable track barriers are made for indoor as well as outdoor tracks.
